Course Description:

Classroom phase – Minimum of 30 clock hours required (with the nine weeks schedule, we get approximately 36 classroom hours). Emphasis is on safety and efficient use of streets and highways. Main study topics are: traffic laws, laws of nature, alcohol and drugs, adverse driving conditions, buying and insuring a car, highway driving, and motorcycle safety.

Laboratory phase (in-car instruction) – A minimum of 6 hours behind the wheel instruction is mandatory for each student. Designed to provide a sequence of experiences that will enable the learner to progress from simple to complex driving maneuvers (getting ready to put the automobile in motion, starting and stopping, turnabouts, and parking). Driving schedule is as follows:

Approximately: 1-2 hours on rural roads
1-2 hours on highways
2-3 hours city or town (includes parking and turnabouts)

Other state rules – All students must drive a minimum of 50 hours with their parents (10 of those hours must be a night). It is the parent’s responsibility to record these hours on the form provided by the Secretary of State and sign to verify these hours have been completed.

Course Objectives:

Students will understand the maturity and responsibility associated with driving an automobile.
Students will have an understanding of the terminology to enable them to pass he state driver’s exam.
Students will be able to demonstrate the skills needed to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Students will have a general understanding of automobile insurance.
Students will know that the actions they take while driving an automobile have consequences (both good and bad).

Discuss the penalties for DUI and Zero Tolerance convictions.
Discuss ways to handle social pressures.
Explain what drivers should do if they are pulled over by the police.
Automobile insurance
Define various terms associated with automobile insurance.
Discuss the various types of automobile insurance.
Explain the types of coverage that must be carried by drivers in Illinois.

Teaching Methods

This class is taught through lecture, projects, presentations, reading, and discussion. Students are allowed to work together on selected assignments.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on lecture material through tests and quizzes.
