Course Description

The course is needed because of the extensive use of the keyboard in the home and in the workplace. The curriculum is designed to develop basic skills in keyboarding techniques for typewriter style keyboards and ten-key numeric keypads. Major emphasis will be placed on keyboarding techniques, proofreading, correcting errors, formatting, and production of personal and business correspondence that meet business standards. This course is required for entry into Information Processing and Web Design. This course is available for Dual Credit free of charge through Southwestern Illinois College for students who are or will be 16 years of age at any time during the class.

 

Course Objectives/Goals

  • Students will develop touch system of keyboarding technique while learning the alphabetic, numeric and symbol keys.
  • Students will develop speed and accuracy skills.
  • Students will proofread and edit copy.
  • Students will perform vertical and horizontal centering.
  • Students will compose at the keyboard.
  • Students will prepare these documents in a correct format:
    • Personal and business letters
    • Envelopes
    • Reports, title pages, reference pages
    • Memos and Email
    • Outlines and itineraries
    • Tables

Teaching Methods

The course is taught through demonstration and discussion of a concept before the students apply it on computer and/or typewriter. After concepts are learned, review is done frequently. Students improve keyboarding speed and accuracy through the use of enrichment materials. Group and individual projects will also be used.

Extra Credit
