Course Description

The course includes the concepts and terminology of information processing as well as skill development in the use of information processing equipment and software. Areas of instruction include word processing, database, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, making presentations, Internet and telecommunications. The role computers play in modern society as well as a brief history of computing is included. Dual credit is available free of charge through Southwestern Illinois College for students who are or will be 16 or older during the course.

 

Course Objectives/Goals

  • Students will know the purposes, functions, terminology and common features of word processing, database, spreadsheet, web page design and multimedia presentation software.
  • Students will use touch keyboarding techniques and word processing software to create, modify, store, retrieve, edit and print documents.
  • Students will use database software to plan, create, modify, store, query, retrieve, sort and print data.
  • Students will use 10-key numeric pad and spreadsheet software to design, create, manipulate, store, retrieve, update, add, search, sort, print, chart and delete data.
  • Students will design and enter formulas that permit users to ask “what if” questions to analyze spreadsheet data.
  • Students will use presentation and multimedia software to design, create, import data/graphics/scanned images/sound/video, edit, format, sequence, and produce presentations.
  • Students will use sound web design principles and web page software to create and modify web sites for individuals and organizations.
  • Students will have basic understanding of the history of computers, computer operating systems, telecommunications and the Internet.
  • Students will prepare employment documents, participate in a mock interview and be introduced to workplace skills.

Teaching Methods

The course is taught through lecture, readings, group work, presentations and discussion of concepts and current computer news items. Students apply the concepts on the computer when doing problems and exercises. As a part of the employment unit, a mock interview is conducted for each student.
