Course Description/Outline

This is a continuation of the Orientation to Home Economics.  The latter portion of the school year is devoted to textiles and sewing.  Included are discussions about color and design.  Maximum satisfaction is gained (by the student) when aesthetic values and practical considerations are used to guide the selection and use of clothing and fabric.  To express individuality and personality in his/her dress, a person must understand himself or herself.   The student selects the pattern and fabric to reflect his/her values. The garment is constructed and finished by the end of the school year.  Basic sewing skills included are:

·        Taking body measurements and selecting pattern size

·        The pattern envelope

·        Making fabric choices

·        Fabric preparation

·        Reading the instruction/guide sheet

·        Pattern symbols/adjustments

·        Pattern layout, pinning and cutting

·        Transferring pattern symbols to the fabric

·        Small equipment and notions

·        Operating the sewing machine and sewing machine parts

·        Pressing as you sew

·        Constructions of various seams

·        Clipping, notches, trimming and grading of  seams

·        Seam finishes

·        Learning to use the serger

·        Learning to sew with the serger

·        Construction of boxer shorts (projects depend upon the makeup of the class)
