Course Description

The main focus of health is to teach students how to obtain total wellness in their lives. A variety of subject areas are covered, including: physical fitness and nutrition, appearance, emotions and behavior, mental and emotional disorders, steroids, drugs, alcohol and tobacco, major health problems and infectious diseases, public health and health services, safety and first aid, and sex education.

 

Course Objectives/Goals

  • Students will be able to explain the basic principles of health promotion, illness prevention, and safety.
  • Students will be able to describe and explain the factors that influence health among individuals, groups and communities.
  • Students will be able to explain how the environment can affect health.
  • Students will be able to describe and explain the structure and functions of the human body systems and how they interrelate.
  • Students will be able to explain the effects of health related actions on the body systems.
  • Students will be able to describe factors that affect growth and development.
  • Students will demonstrate procedures for communicating in positive ways, resolving differences and preventing conflict.
  • Students will apply decision-making skills related to the protection and promotion of individual health.
  • Students will demonstrate skills essential to enhancing health and avoiding dangerous situations.
  • Students will understand some of the history behind the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs, the effects of alcohol, tobacco and drugs on the body, and the economic, social, and safety problems connected with alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
  • Students will understand the long and short term effects of steroid use on the body.

5. Disease Prevention

  • Infectious Diseases
  • AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

6. The Life Cycle

  • Pairing, Commitment and Marriage
  • From Conception through parenting
  • Mature life, aging and death.

7. First Aid and Safety

  • Accident and Injury Prevention
  • Emergency Measures

 

Teaching Methods

This class is taught through lecture, study guides, projects, presentations, independent study, reading, videos, and guest speakers. Students are allowed to work together on selected projects and are given worksheets and handouts to supplement each unit.

 

Assessment

  • Cooperative group presentations to be evaluated by teacher and/or peers according to rubric detailed with various desirable behaviors that contribute to a quality project.
  • Successful group discussing behavior will be evaluated by the teacher according to demonstration of skillful paraphrasing, intelligent questioning strategies, and evidence of respectful responses.
  • Oral presentations to be evaluated by the teacher and peers through accuracy of information and effective, accepted public speaking practices.
  • Tests and quizzes that include essay, short answer, multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank and true/false type questions.
  • Completion of daily work and participation in daily discussions.
