Course Description

The first part of the course is a review of building materials, safety rules, hand tools, and power tools. The course then elaborates on the study and practical application of cabinet construction, operating power tools and machines correctly, designing, cost analysis, furniture finishing processes, etc. These competencies and skills will be acquired through producing furniture and cabinets. Craftsmanship attitude development, finishing procedures, advanced construction techniques, skills developed in the use of all wood working machines and all portable power tools, safety procedures are stressed.

 

This course included study and practical application in building trade construction. Craftsmanship, attitude development, finishing procedures, advanced construction techniques, skill developed in the use if all woodworking machines, and portable power tools, safety procedures are stressed. Building trades and house construction theory is heavily covered along with surveying techniques and building trades occupations. Skill in carpentry, roofing, masonry, and painting are developed by constructing garden or storage buildings.

Professionalism, work place skills, and Illinois State Social and Emotional standards are also addressed in this class.

 

Goals & Objectives

  • Students will be able to apply Safety First.
  • The students will be able to identify what procedure need to be followed and perform the steps in that procedure.
  • Students will be able to identify the type of wood, the grade of wood, and panel stock.
  • Students will be able to calculate board feet and cost.
  • Students will be able to apply the proper procedure when using the tool along with following safety procedures.
  • Students will be able to apply the proper procedure when using the tool along with following safety procedures.
  • Students will be able to apply the proper procedure when using the hand tools along with following safety procedures.
  • Students will be able to apply the proper procedure when using the power tools along with following safety procedures.
  • Students will be able to decide on a dog house design, draw up the plans, estimate the cost, and build the dog house.
  • Students will demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of the “Shop Safety Rules” before entering the Shop.
  • Students will demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of the “Floor Plan of the Shop” before entering the Shop.
  • Students will demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of the “Shop Material and Tools Rules” before entering the Shop.
  • Students will demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of the “Shop Clean-Up Rules” before entering the Shop.
  • Students will be able to determine if an object is level, set up a leveling line and site lines in order to lay out a building.
  • Students will be able to read the plans, identify codes and specifications.
  • Students will be able to lay out the lines for excavation.
  • Student will be able to determine what types of footings are necessary for block and concrete foundations.
  • Students will be able to design individual projects, determine the supplies, figure board feet and determine the cost of that project.
  • Student will be able to identify and describe different types of floor framing.
  • Students will be able to research garden or storage building plans, draw up, determine list of supplies and estimate cost.
  • Students will be able to identify the parts of a load and non-load bearing wall.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe the parts of a ceiling and roof.
  • Student will be able to identify and describe how to install different types of windows and doors.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe the different types of insulation and how to install.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe the type of interior trim and how to install.

Teaching Methods

This course is taught through lecture, study guides, projects, and presentations, independent study, reading, videos, guest speakers, and field trips. Students are allowed to work together on selected projects and are given worksheets and handouts to supplement each unit.
