Course Description

Drawing & Painting I is an introductory fine arts course that revolves around the elements and principles of art and how they apply to two-dimensional processes.   Initially, this course concentrates on teaching students the fundamentals in drawing.  Once competent, the students then explore a variety of media during the second half of the year.  This course is anchored by a strong art history background and also focuses on art philosophy.  Frequent class critiques are essential in developing the student’s ability to recognize, discuss, and evaluate aesthetics in an intelligent manner.

Course Objectives/Goals

The students shall:

§         Engage in the critical analysis, both verbal and written, on the art of their peers and other artists.

§         Experience and practice a variety of art processes & media.

§         Learn & understand appropriate art vocabulary.

§         Explore the different people and movements in art history.

§         Strive towards good craftsmanship.

§         Freely employ creative skills & thinking in order to create meaningful and original works of art.

Course Outline

  1. Introduction to Drawing
    • Positive & Negative Space
    • Contour Drawing:  blind contour & basic
    • Sighting:  verticals, horizontals, and angles
    • Sighting:  proportions and relationships
    • Perspective:  one & two point
    • Value:  scales and contrast
    • Shading:  geometric solids
    • Still Life:  three levels of complexity

 

  1. Introduction to Media
    • Pencil, Charcoal, & Ink
    • Pastel & Colored Pencil
    • Acrylic & Watercolor
    • Collage & Other Mixed Media

 

Teaching Methods

Students will partake in a number of learning methodologies.  Presentation, guided practice, and individual practice are all a part of the drawing segment.  There are also class discussions and lectures that are imperative to the growth of not only skills, but also the understanding of aesthetics and concepts.  Class critiques are held at the midway and end of every project so that the students may offer and receive input about their work and the work of others.  Higher order thinking and problem solving skills are emphasized and encouraged. 

Assessment Strategies

§         This course recognizes attendance and participation as essential.

§         Points are deducted for late work.

§         Students will receive 5-20 points for every sketchbook assignment.  Homework is assigned.

§         Written material is graded on both accuracy and content.  Legibility is expected. 

§         Creativity exercises receive participation grades ranging from 10-40 points.

§         Students are graded on all artwork created.  This includes sketches, rough drafts, and final outcomes.  Commendation is granted for effort and risk taking.  Projects may range from 50-200 points.

Post Note Regarding Upper Level Art

Students in Art II are to proceed with class assignments that are meant to further their technical skill and challenge their abilities.  Freedom with subject and media is granted based on effort and proficiency.   Art III & IV are independent study.  Students are encouraged to select areas of interest to explore.
