Course Description The purpose of this class is to provide students with the opportunity to explore issues regarding families and parents. Emphasis is placed on developing healthy attitudes and techniques for pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. The program explores the emotional, financial, and social consequences of parenting. It addresses the health and safety needs of both parents and children and discusses the various challenges that parents face. Other topics, from the text, Parenting: Rewards and Responsibilities, include: · The Family Life Cycle · Legal Rights and Responsibilities of Parents · Genetics and Conception · Prenatal Development · Birth Defects · Stages of Labor/Childbirth · Understanding Newborns · Types of Development · Teen Pregnancy Issues • Nutrition during Pregnancy
Assessment The class is taught through lecture, projects, presentations, readings, and videos. Students frequently work in groups to enhance the learning experience. Students are given worksheets and other related handouts for each unit. Tests are given after every other chapter.
Enrichment Annual Field Trip · A visit to Sparta Hospital it scheduled in the spring of the school year. The birth, labor and “regular” delivery rooms are viewed; a discussion about delivery and hospital procedures etc. is given by an obstetrics nurse.
