¡Feliz navidad de las clases de español y el club de español! (Merry Christmas from the Spanish classes and Spanish Club!) – submitted by Michelle Mohr
The Spanish classes and Spanish Club would like to wish you a merry holiday season. This week the Spanish I classes researched and learned about traditional holiday celebrations for the month of December. These included “Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe” (Day of our Lady of Guadalupe), “Nochebuena” (Christmas Eve), “Navidad” (Christmas), “Nochevieja” (New Year’s Eve), “Las Posadas” (Literally, “The Lodgings” – it is a nine day celebration leading up to Christmas), andNight of the Radishes). and abanos"ched and learned about traditional holiday celebrations for the month of December. “Noche de Rábanos” (Night of the Radishes). The students even reenacted a traditional activity in class for New Year’s Eve in which they ate “doce uvas” (twelve grapes) which some in Hispanic nations believe will bring good luck for each of the coming months of the new year.
Spanish II is currently learning family vocabulary. They are creating “Árboles de Familia” (Family Trees) on large sheets of poster board that show either photos or drawings of family members, name them in a traditional Hispanic manner (including multiple last names), and describe them in various ways.
The Spanish Club will also be singing Christmas carols in Spanish next week to students in the district.

STUDENTS TRAVEL TO HOLOCAUST MUSEUM – submitted by Michelle Mohr
On Monday, November 28, a group of SHS students traveled to the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center of St. Louis. The museum was opened in 1995 and houses collections, exhibits, and programs to educate others about the history and consequences of the Holocaust. The group was able to view photographs, artifacts, text panels, and audio-visual displays. They first received a tour that included viewing images of photographs and hearing stories of Holocaust survivors who immigrated to St. Louis. Then they were able to meet with survivor Gunther Goldsmith who related his story of survival as a Jewish boy in Nazi Germany.
