THE EXTRA DEGREE

At 211 degrees...water is hot.
At 212 degrees...it boils.
And with boiling water, comes steam.
And steam can power a locomotive.
And, it's that one extra degree that...
Makes all the difference.

So many times in life, it's that one extra degree of effort that separates the good from the great

SHS students are working hard to give the extra degree this year!  If you have a chance take a look at the posters in each of the end hallways.  Each class (9th, 10th, etc) created a poster listing goals and ways in which they would give the “extra degree” this year.

WESTERN EGYPTIAN ECOMONIC OPPORTUNITY COUNCIL, INC.

Western Egyptian Economic Opportunity Council is a non-profit agency which administers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP) in Jackson, Monroe, Perry, and Randolph Counties.

If you or anyone you know is interested in applying for assistance please contact the Randolph County Outreach Office at 443-5231.

BUS EVACUATION DRILLS

Wednesday, September 14, 2011 will be Bus Evacuation Drill Day for all schools in Monroe and Randolph counties.  State law requires school children to participate in one bus evacuation drill each school year.  This is because there is an urgent need, due to the increased number of pupils being transported and the ever-increasing number of crashes on the highways, to acquaint students with their roles and responsibilities.  Being prepared in the event of an accident is the best way to reduce serious injury and fatalities.

LIVING HISTORY IN OUR BACKYARD

An impressive piece of living history, Landing Ship, Tank (LST) 325 docks at the Chester riverfront September 16-18.  LSTs were a class of naval vessel that supported amphibious landing operations by transporting battle-ready vehicles, supplies and troops directly onto foreign shores.  Enormously useful during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, LSTs were used by all branches of the services.

LST 325 was one of 1,051 LSTs built during WWII and one of only two LSTs preserved in the United States.  After serving her country for many years, she served in the Greek Navy from 1964 to 1999 before returning to the United States in 2001.  Her arrival at Chester will coincide with an Historical Military Vehicle Display and WWII Living Camp along the Mississippi riverbank, and she will be open for tours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. all three days.

“I don't believe for a second that success is just about self-motivation. If that were all it took, all any of us would ever need is a little pep rally now and again and we'd soar to the stars. But after all the rah-rahs and the warm feelings wear off, it's ultimately about action.” - Rob Walman

“Success is for those who know what they want and go after it, no matter how difficult the path.” - Jacques A. Nasser
